Fire Hose Maintenance and Repair
All fire fighting equipment do not last forever. Regular maintenance is required to ensure that fire fight equipment is safe and ready for use when needed. If needed, we also supply brand new fire hoses that can comply to Singapore Standards 575 and BS 6391.
Under Singapore Standards 575 2012,
Standby fire hoses shall be provided for every rising main / downcomer except for those in building purpose group 2 as defined in the fire code.
When a fire occurs, the fire man at ground level first connects the fire hydrant to the fire engine with a fire hose. The fire engine that is equipped with fire pumps in turn pumps water into the risers. At the level where the fire is, the landing valves will be connected with fire hoses to reach the fires.
The riser system while comprehensive requires the maintenance of the following:
1. The fire hydrant
2. The dry or wet risers
3. The standby fire hoses
4. The fire engine and fire pump
If any are not working, the entire system will not work, therefore regular maintenance is very important. In the above mentioned list, the owner or occupant of the building is reponsible for the fire hydrant, risers and standby fire hoses.
Fire Armour is pleased to inform all our clients that we have a proper workshop and calibrated pressure gauges to safely pressure test fire hoses to BS 6391 Standards.
SCDF and fire code uses BS 6391 as the standard for all fire hoses to be used in Singapore.
Under BS 6391 Annex A,
Fire hoses in services should be hydrostatic tested at least once a year.
During the hydrostatic test, water is first pumped into a close ended fire hose until the working pressure is reached. This pressure is held for 1 minute while the the fire hose is inspected for leaks and damages. After which, the pressure is increased to the test pressure stated on the fire hose for another minute and inspected for leaks and damages. The fire hose is then returned to services at its original position.
During hydrostatic testing, it is common for damaged hoses to leak or even have their coupling fly off. Trained technicians are strongly recommended for this test.
